I am a small business lawyer with a passion and commitment to making small businesses succeed. Before entering the legal profession, I worked in a variety of areas, ranging from from military service in the U.S. Navy to technology companies to political operations and lobbying. This diversity of experience gives me the ability to look at problems from multiple perspectives and offer insight into business operations as well as legal concerns. My goal as a general counsel to business owners is to allow you to concentrate on the operational side of their business while watching your “legal back.” After all, business owners did not get into business to worry about laws and regulations, you got into business to provide a good or service to their customers and make money.
I am admitted to practice before the state and federal courts of Maryland and admitted to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. But I can and do offer some services to folks all over the country if that is necessary.
Prior to opening this firm, I was a contract attorney for Stein Sperling Bennett De Jong Driscoll, P.C. in Rockville, MD and an associate with Gordon & Simmons, LLC in Frederick, MD. This experience gave me in-depth experience with a wide variety of businesses, business operations, and risk assessment.
Before becoming an attorney, I worked for a number of technology companies that provided campaign finance compliance software and political technology tools for government affairs organizations. My role to external customers included advising clients on compliance with campaign finance laws and using the technology tools to the maximum effectiveness. Internally, I provided legal information to the company’s programmers to write the software as well as testing the software to ensure that the end product satisfied the regulatory requirements (that is fancy tech speak for “my job was to break the software before the customers did.”) I also worked for trade associations in Washington, DC lobbying on several issues in the healthcare field, most notably on long term care insurance issues.
I am a 2005 cum laude graduate of the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America, where I served as a Note & Comment Editor on the CommLaw Conspectus: Journal of Communications Law. I studied for a single semester at The George Washington University studying political management. In 1997 I graduated from the University of Maryland-College Park cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Government & Politics.
For the most part, I grew up in Orange Park and Middleburg, Florida. Before going to college, I was an enlisted sailor in the United States Navy from 1990 to 1994 where I spent nearly three years with the United States Navy Ceremonial Guard and 15 months in the Navigation Department aboard the U.S.S. Seattle (AOE-3)(now decommissioned).
I live in Frederick, MD with my wife Amanda, two daughters and a (female) dog. During my spare time, I am a licensed soccer referee with the United States Soccer Federation and the National Federation of High School Sports. When not refereeing, I can often be found playing soccer or watching a soccer game. I am a big fan of the United States Men’s and Women’s National Soccer Teams, D. C. United, Tampa Bay Rowdies, the Washington Spirit and of course, the University of Maryland Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams. I love music (particularly live concerts–not that we get to as many as we used to), cooking, colonial history and science fiction.
